The 1st World Riichi Championship in 2014 was my first foray into photography. Inspired by seeing photo albums such as this go tournament in Cambridge in 1976, I wanted to document the growing mahjong community. Thus, a few weeks before the first WRC, I bought a simple entry level DSLR, a Nikon D3300.

As I was a beginner, all photos in this post were shot with the kit lens (18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G).

The first World Riichi Championship took place on 16th July and ended on the 20th, in Paris. Organized by Puteaux based mahjong club TNT in Puteaux's town hall. It was the first big riichi mahjong event with players from all over the world. It was the first time meeting Japanese professional mahjong players for many western players, and the first time meeting western mahjong players for many Japanese professionals. The winner was Japan Professional Mahjong League's Hiroshi Yamai
