#mahjong league

I’m making an interest check for a Friday night mahjong league, using osamuko.com as the main portal for communicating results and ponpalace.com for discussion. We’ve had various experiences at tournaments before, and I wanted to see if we can take it one step further. I’m willing to take care of the logistics and organization as long as there’s enough people taking part.

To do this, I will need a few things from our faithful readers:

1- Your interest. Please send your intention of participating to ex@white-fang.info and I will compile the list of interested players. I’m looking for at least 12, preferably 16 or 20 to start up. Registered accounts are mandatory, and cannot be switched mid-season.

2- Your dedication. I’m looking for stable three-month commitments for Friday nights (every 2 Friday nights to be precise). I also want to avoid signing up ragequitters or people that are not likely to hang around. People in #mahjong have priority, or most likely will probably be the only people considered for now. If you think this restriction is unfair, let me know by e-mail.

3- Your time zone, and the range of time you can realistically play on a Friday night. My intention is to set up two parallel sessions on the same night split by a few hours. The soonest I can start something up would be 1700 Eastern (2100GMT, 2200 in Britain, 2300 in Europe), and my goal would be to have the other session about 2-3 hours later. You only have to take part in one.

The general information concerning the league is as follows:
– Every league night, you and three opponents play 4 games together. These games will all be played on Tenhou, with the standard mode we play with: East-South match, ari, red, fast.

– Scores will be taken as-is from Tenhou. The ante and spread are as follows: 20 oka, 10-20 uma.

– For the first season, the league will not be stratified, but may become as such afterward at our discretion (or more importantly, with your interest).

– Penalties: Late players have less than 5 minutes free. For every full 5 minutes beyond, the penalty applied is -9, distributed to your opponents equally. After 30 minutes, you will be considered as having forfeited. Forfeiture and no-shows will be penalized -90, half of that redistributed
to the waiting players, the other half to be held. This goes without mentioning, but anyone who has a forfeit match may receive some kind of sanction, and anyone who has forfeit more than once will not be re-invited to future matches.

I’m willing to do all the back-end work, so all we’re missing is you.

TENTATIVE START DATE: July 2, 2010. Please contact me before June 15. Thanks!

  1. This sounds sort of Umai, but I’m not too sure on the Umai levels that this idea is dishing out to me… Gonna have to get back to you once I get the UmaiMeter working; its currently on the fritz! So I’ll hit you guys back in the near future, peace.

  2. Perhaps you could like ask interested parties to leave a comment to reserve a spot, then subsequently travel to irc and track you down. Contrary to what you guys might imagine, mahjong is a lot more fun with IRC, and it’s not like you have to mess about in a roomful of strangers, since you can more or less create a league channel for participants only.

  3. Their comments here are welcome. But I can’t reserve a spot on a comment alone. This is why either a few (more than one) contacts by IRC or an e-mail is necessary. Any questions anyone might have are welcome though :)

  4. I had to pick a day. If this succeeds, maybe an expansion to another day would work. But since we’re a group of people from all over, it doesn’t make sense for us to do this on a weekday.

  5. Unfortunately fridays are the only days when I play poker live, and I’m not willing to give up easy money :|

  6. So far, so good for responses. Some questions and things I had to think about are as follows:

1: Byes. I may be able to implement a system, while not perfect, will allow one (and only 1) bye.

2: Tenhou score adjustment. In case of a tie, I am willing to break Tenhou’s lead splitter into a fair result.

3: I’ll need a few more people able to play in either time slot, and a few for both (2100GMT, and 0000GMT, count your summer time accordingly. Britain is +1 for example.).

4: Dates. Every second Friday from July 2nd, so that would include the 16th, the 30th, August 13, August 27, and September 10.

5: In case it’s the best way to balance matches, instead of 4 matches with the same 3 opponents, there may be a 5 player, 5 match block in which each player sits out one game. This all depends on number of signups, availabilities and crap like that.

When I get a sufficient number of signups, I will make a new post with new information.

  7. Unfortunately, Fridays would be no good for me. Otherwise I’d be 100% in. I would have figured Sunday afternoon/evening would have been the best time. Not too much going on, then.

  8. For the fall edition, I might consider a Sunday session. But no putting the horse in front of the cart here: this session has to work before the next one can be hammered out.

Having said that, I’m satisfied by the current response level, but a few more players would still be necessary to ensure a good league. It’s easier to accommodate for more players rather than less.

  9. I’m very interested, but I’ll be at a summer program in Japan for a good portion of the summer which might conflict with the schedule, but I’d like to eventually get with a regular playing group. I haven’t played on tenhou in a while, need to get the hang of that again. Maybe I can convince some of the people I know who play very casually to step it up and join >:D | If summer’s no good at least the fall. I’ve got a Mahjong club that meets every other friday anyway, if I could force them off the tiles that have guides on them maybe I could get a few people.

  10. I haven’t played mahjong with any degree of frequency in so long that I’d most likely be total failboat at this point.

  11. @Golgo 13

Funny. It’s the exact opposite in my case. I have played mahjong with a high degree of frecuency for so long that I am a total failboat at this point. So it shall be interesting to see.

  12. I know who Golgo and Sumio are, in Zein’s case, I’ll need to know more about you to confirm your presence.

In any case, for the three of you, I need you to e-mail me or send a message by PM on ponpalace.com or reachmahjong.com’s new forums (*/en/forum/). I have to confirm the stuff I mentioned in my post, if you understand the time of day, when you’re available and stuff.
