Tile Efficiency 101 (Part 4)

Tile Efficiency 101 (Part 4)

The more I've been playing lately, especially on fast tables, the more I see how you need to have tile efficiency theory very in mind. Especially in nashi-nashi games, where you can't just kui-tan your way to a full hand. So, I decided we should go on. Let's resume from where we last left off.

This time it's only short theory, with tile images and all, as next post will have a lot of hard-text theory (more like brainwashing, in the good way). This is more like a continuation of last time, so, yeah, if you don't like posts that tell you "Hey, you're discarding good shapes!" feel free to skip this and wait for the next part (if you want me to resume this chapter in a single sentence: "when in doubt, matagi").

Taatsu Theory

About complex taatsu and their application.

1."Ryanmen + Kanchan" Shape

Here let's abord the 6 tiles pattern
1s3s4s5s5s6s.

Not only 4s7s, it's a shape with uke-iru for the 2s as well.

As this is a shape that comes out rather frequently, let's be careful as to not overlook the kanchan shape in an actual game.

Ex1

3m4m4m5m8m8m2p2p7p8p9p2s3s Tsumo: 6m

Example 1 is a very famous "WWYD" problem. Discarding 8m leaving the uke-ire for 7m is correct.

Ex2

2p4p4p5p6p6p7p1s1s2s3s4s5s Tsumo: 4s Dora: 3p

In the case of example 2, discarding 4p it becomes a "ryanmen + kanchan" shape, and we can use the dora.

If the dora wasn't 3p, discarding 2p leaving the possibility for ii pei kou is also efficient.

2. Other complex shapes

Ex3

3m4m4m7m8m5p5p6p6p6p7p8p8p Tsumo: 9m Dora: 7m

Getting fixated on san an kou or ii pei kou discarding 6p is a waste.

Since we get to tenpai even by drawing , here we must be serious.

Discarding 4m is an extremely superior discard.

Ex4

1m3m3m4m5m6m6m7m2s3s7s8s8s Tsumo: 1s Dora: 9s

Discarding 8s and leaving the kanchan ukeire for is a good move.

Of course, if we complete the side of the souzu (bamboos) first, we take the 5m wait, but rather than taking he shanpon uke-ire tiles, it's better to have a higher pinfu probability.

There are many 8 tiles patterns like the following:

1m2m2m3m4m5m5m6m 3m, 4-7m

2m2m3m3m4m5m5m6m 2m, 3m, 1-4-7m

2m2m3m3m4m5m5m7m 6m, 1-4m

2m3m3m4m5m6m6m7m 1-4m, 5-8m

They don't have a high probability of occurrence, but because it's easy to overlook the uke-ire let's be careful.

Ex5

2s2s4s6s6s4p5p7p8p9p5z5z5z Tsumo: 8s

Discarding 8s has the widest uke-ire .

Drawing 2s3s5s6s gets us to tenpai.

Discarding 4s or 6s reduces the uke-ire by 4 tiles and is uneffective.

Anyways, this post and the next one aren't published "live." I just used the "scheduled publishment" option. They were written with anteriority, and auto-published at a set date. Meaning that if you want to contact me about this, you'll have to wait. The day this post is published, my girlfriend will have arrived from Japan, so I'll be spending a lot of time with her before she goes back. Don't search for me, for I won't answer. Thank you~ See you guys in January.
