Completely unofficial WRC manner guidelines

It’s less than a week until the World Riichi Championship in Paris will begin, marking an unprecedented clash between some of the best professional players from Japan and others from all over the world. Are you excited? We at osamuko sure are.
We thought it might be a good idea to ease some of the doubts or insecurities players might have in relation to general manner do’s and don’ts and came up with a few points laid out here. Some of them might be common sense but we’ll still mention them because of our experiences in a number of western tournaments.

Reachmahjong already published some very good advice on general Japanese Mahjong manners a while back, make sure you read it. We will reiterate a few important points and add some here.

Upcoming World Riichi Championship Tournament

First off, a little introduction since not everyone is aware of what’s currently the hot topic in the western Mahjong hemisphere:

The French Riichi Mahjong club TNT is organizing the first ever World Riichi Championship (WRC) in Paris between the 16th and 20th of July this year. The tournament is scheduled to battle it out with 120 players in 14 hanchan during that time. There is a country-quota system in place which allocates 50 seats to Japanese and 50 seats to European players. The remaining 20 seats are delegated to China, Korea, the Americas and “the rest of the world”.

Also, this is the sorry excuse for a post. Please wait warmly for Osamu’s Guildford report. Maybe I’ll write something up to contribute there too. But first, let’s share the rage and laughs.
While I personally don’t know that feel, he certainly has my condolences.
